The long-term exodus of companies from California to Texas continued with the relocation of headquarters in 2023.
Of the 19 high-profile corporate headquarters moves in Dallas-Fort Worth this year, 11 involved companies relocating from the Golden State to the Lone Star State.
But the year's biggest corporate relocation was as multibillion-dollar companies left the East Coast for more modern offices in Dallas' Uptown district.
Connecticut-based Frontier Communications moved its headquarters to McKinney Street in September and pledged to create up to 3,000 new jobs in Texas over the next 10 years. Cable and Internet providers chose Dallas over competing cities such as Tampa.
With 2022 sales of just under $5.8 billion, Frontier is one of the 30 largest publicly traded companies based in D-FW.
Food manufacturing and technology companies have been the most prominent movers from California to North Texas this year.
In May, Cacique Foods moved its headquarters from Monrovia, California to Irving. The company, one of the leading Mexican food brands, said it wants to deepen its ties to Texas and better serve its customers with a centralized location.
Cacique is a leader in a multi-billion dollar food category, with at least one product sold in 80% of grocery stores nationwide. The food manufacturer known for Mexican-style cheese, crema and chorizo also opened a new dairy processing facility in Amarillo.
Last year, Mexican frozen food maker Luis Food Products established Frisco as a joint headquarters with an office in Dinuba, California. The family-owned company, which has been in business for more than 50 years, made its Hall Park office its sole corporate location this year, leaving its California office as a manufacturing facility. Ruiz makes frozen burritos, taquitos, enchiladas and tamales under the El Monterey and Tornados brand names for grocery stores in the United States and Canada.
The direct sales company, which sells $1,500 cooking appliances, announced in August that it would move its headquarters from Thousand Oaks, Calif., to Dallas by the end of this year. Other companies that have expanded to the West Coast this year include Kelly Moore Paint Company, home builder Landsea Homes and military eyewear maker Wiley-X.
Kelly-Moore Paint Co. has moved its headquarters from the San Francisco area to Irving's Las Colinas business district. The company opened a manufacturing facility in Hurst, North Texas, more than five years ago.
With annual sales of approximately $400 million and more than 1,200 employees, Kelly-Moore sells its products in 157 stores in California, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.
