Thousands of runners began picking up their BMW Dallas Marathon packets and race bids Friday inside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.
People participate for different reasons.
Marathon runner Shereen Robbins said, “It's just the discipline. The mental health side, the physical side. I've always enjoyed it. My dad ran marathons.” Ta.
Marathon runner Ian Young said: “I love getting out and running around in the fresh air and seeing everyone cheering me on. There are some great signs here, like the power ups. ” he said.
Organizers say this year has been a record year for registration. All races are sold out.
Thousands of people will be passing through roads that will be closed to normal weekend traffic heading to local businesses.
“It's going to be a little slower on Sunday afternoon, but I think business is great. They really understand the positive impact they have on the community,” said Dallas Marathon Board Chairman Charles Payton.
Some businesses along Greenville Street say it will be difficult for employees and customers to get to their stores on race day. They know they will lose business that day.
Amanda Campbell is the general manager of Halcyon Coffee Shop and Restaurant.
She plans to open on Sunday and has told her staff to plan accordingly.
“We just have to make sure and make sure we don't try to drive down this street. We have to go around the back side,” Campbell said.
Campbell, who started his business in 2017, has been running a marathon for a few days now.
“It's tough. There's more people around to watch, but fewer people are actually coming to brunch. It's still going to be a productive day,” Campbell said.
Despite the challenges, it was an enjoyable race day for Campbell.
“It's a fun day. Good energy,” Campbell said.
