A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle on Interstate 635 in Dallas early Thursday morning, prompting the closure of all eastbound lanes of the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway due to morning rush hour traffic.
Police said the accident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. in the 9500 block of LBJ Expressway.
A department spokesperson said Thursday that a preliminary investigation indicates that a woman was driving eastbound in the far right lane of the freeway near the Skillman Street exit ramp when she drove between two temporary construction barriers and struck a plastic barrier. It was determined that the vehicle had crashed and returned to the highway. The woman parked in the second lane from the right and got out of the car.
Police said the van, which was also eastbound, struck a woman who was standing in the doorway.
The woman, whose identity has not yet been released, died at the scene.
The driver of the van stopped at the scene and remained at the scene until police arrived.
Investigation is ongoing.
The Texas Department of Transportation's incident tracking report states all lanes were closed as of 9:30 a.m.
About a dozen Dallas police units also remained on the scene late into the morning, as traffic was backed up for miles.
