The next van rolling around a corner near you may be rushing to bring in future youth from out of state.
Texas is the No. 1 state in the nation for attracting Gen Z out-of-state immigrants, according to a new real estate analysis from Zillow.
Nearly 80,000 more Gen Z adults will join in 2022 alone
In 2022, the Lone Star State experienced a net migration of more than 76,805 Gen Z adults.
California ranked second in attracting Gen Z, drawing far fewer people from other states in 2022, at less than 44,000. That's despite a decline of 215,000 people across the Golden State that year.
Florida, North Carolina, and Washington are among the top five most attractive cities for Gen Z.
Which states attracted the least Gen Z in 2022? Michigan, Maryland, and Idaho. And Michigan was the only state in the U.S. with “more Gen Z departures than arrivals” in 2022, Zillow said. Maybe they don't like the Wolverines?
Narrowed down Gen Z adults to those born between 1996 and 2004.
Generation Z is typically defined as people born between 1997 and 2012 and currently between the ages of 12 and 27. However, to arrive at the report's findings, Zillow analyzed the U.S. Census Bureau's 2022 American Community Survey, and in order to narrow the demonstrations to “Gen Z adults,” It was defined as people born between 2004 and 2004.
To avoid capturing college students who are temporarily on the move, Zillow's statistics exclude respondents who reported attending school within the past three months.
“Compared to all interstate migrants, Gen Z adults who moved to California, Washington, Colorado, or Virginia were more likely to earn a four-year college degree and more likely to serve in the military. and more likely to work in the technology industry, ACS data shows.” edward barchiksaid Zillow's chief population scientist in a statement. “Gen Z immigrants are more likely to be attracted to job opportunities in these states despite higher housing costs. They also want flexibility in their standard of living while starting their careers. Maybe I’m at a stage in my life where I can accept it.”
