I know it's still early, but it seems like the 2023 draft was one of the least productive drafts in recent years. Will this have a negative impact on the future development of the team? Can you give us some reasons to be optimistic about the 2023 draft class? – Tommy Long/Lebanon, Pennsylvania
Nick Harris: The 2023 draft class was one of the Cowboys' biggest draft failures in the past decade. ESPN ranked it the worst in the NFL since 2023, but the only rookies with consistent playing time were Maji Smith and Luke Schoonmaker, both former first-round picks and second-round picks. This is because he did not live up to the expectations of his first year as a target. I can give him an optimistic view on two points. One of them, third-round pick Demarvion Overshawn, will get a chance to be on the field next season after tearing his ACL in the preseason during a training camp that drew a lot of attention. Dew. If he had stayed healthy, he would have played significant minutes after Leighton Vander Esch's injury. Second, most of the draft class had positional flexibility entering this year, working multiple spots in training camp. After a year of development, flex players generally feel a little more comfortable.
patrick: I have a rule when it comes to scoring draft classes. That's something you never do in your first year. I know it's easy (and lazy) to start making draft grades immediately after being drafted and then do it throughout the first season, but the reality is that not all rookies put in their full effort. Not. That doesn't mean it's bankrupt. What's really going on here is how good the Cowboys usually are in the draft, and the fact that the 2022 class is off to the hottest start in franchise history as a group, we all (including the current company) I think it's natural for people to be spoiled. In comparison, the 2023 class' first campaign looks much worse. That being said, while it's true that Year 2 needs to be explosive in many ways for the 2023 group — especially with Maji Smith as one example — I think Demarvion Overshawn's I suspect that his return will be the trigger for that explosion. The pessimism lies in how quickly the Cowboys' draft class typically makes an impact compared to this latest one, but the optimism lies in the fact that some players will make an impact in their second or third year. The reason lies in the fact that it does not stick out to the eyes.
