We all know what makes the perfect bath: a spritz of essential oils, a few rose petals, and listening to Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran on repeat. Not yet Why not transform your bathtub itself for the most luxurious bathing experience ever? Clawfoot tubs are the most luxurious way to bathe (example: Beyoncé and Jay-Z have clawfoot tubs in their luxury New Orleans homes). And not only are they aesthetically beautiful, the benefits of bathing are incredibly powerful, as they can transform even the most modest bathroom into a full-blown spa. Because the clawfoot tub is deeper than most built-in bathtubs,…

A few years ago, Mayor Mike Rawlings got together with some of Dallas' leading real estate agents to discuss how they could convince the business community that the city's underserved southern half was a source of untapped opportunity. Asked. What is their answer? Funding support gives developers additional peace of mind to launch projects in markets that are considered unproven. There, Mr. Rawlings helped raise just over $37 million for a private investment fund run by an independent group without using any taxpayer funds. The problem now is that fund managers are having a hard time finding eligible projects to invest in.“We started…
The rolling foothills of the Boise Mountains stretched before her, grassy hilltops dotted with sagebrush, extending as far as she could see. Kelly Gottschalk traveled miles of narrow roads, shaking her head in disbelief at the thousands of empty acres in rural Idaho. It all belongs to the police officers and firefighters of Dallas.Of all the dubious investments made under Gottschalk’s predecessor — luxury homes in Hawaii, a resort near Napa, high-rise condos in Dallas — this one galled her most. How could a public pension, tasked with protecting the retirements of those who safeguard the city, throw away so much money…

Note: This article has been updated to include a higher total contribution estimate for the Dallas CFO. As the Dallas Police Department and Fire Department rush to solve the Austin case, who is really saving the day? Not you and me.Despite Mayor Mike Rawlings' earlier complaints about “tax bailouts,” the plan through the Legislature would have public safety workers shouldering most of the burden.Dallas police and firefighters will be responsible for about 75% of the cost of pension relief, given the steep reductions in benefits, increased paycheck contributions, and possible revocation. This is a surprising share, even if the split seems…
Dallas and Houston both have pension problems, but Houston is actually solving their pension problems.
The misery of pension life in Dallas also has implications for Houston.Like Dallas, Houston cannot afford billions of dollars in future pension payments and needs help from the state Legislature to solve the problem. But Houston city leaders have something that's proving elusive in Dallas. It's an agreement between employee groups and pension plans that cuts benefits and injects cash into the plans. Now, some police and firefighters here are wondering why Dallas can't find relief like Houston. The demands will likely grow stronger after mediation between the city and pension leaders failed to produce a solution. With billions of dollars and public…
