President Joe Biden is scheduled to arrive in Dallas on Monday US House of Representatives Eddie Bernice Johnson's wake.
The longtime congressman died Sunday at age 89. She retired in December after 30 years in office.
The White House announced Friday that Biden would travel to Dallas to “pay tribute” to the late congressman, but provided no further details.
This will be Biden's first visit to Dallas as president. He is scheduled to leave in the evening of the same day.
After her death Sunday, Biden praised Johnson's leadership and dedication to North Texas in a statement.
“Eddie Bernice Johnson was a dedicated nurse, state representative, and long-serving U.S. Congressman who demonstrated immense courage and dedication to America's promise.” He had an unwavering dedication to the people of North Texas.”
Johnson is the first black woman from Dallas to hold public office. She was also the first registered nurse elected to Congress.
A public viewing for Johnson will be held at the State Building in Fair Park on Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a wake that evening at Concord Church.
A funeral service for Mr. Johnson will also be held at the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. A final graveside service will be held at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
