Taco Tuesday will get a whole new word after the Birmingham Stallions sign former NFL defensive lineman Taco Charlton. The Stallions also placed defensive lineman Willie Yarbury on injured reserve.
Charlton was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played two seasons with the Cowboys and then had various stints around the league. Charlton also played for the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints. He played in 60 games in the NFL, recording 95 tackles, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and three pass deflections.
During his collegiate career with the Michigan Wolverines, Charlton recorded 93 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, 19 sacks, two pass deflections, and one forced fumble in 46 games. He ranked 14th in the country with 9.5 sacks and was named first-team All-Big Ten during his senior season in 2016.
Yarbury, who has been a key member of the unit for the past two seasons in the USFL, is a big loss for the Stallions' defensive line. He had 70 tackles and seven sacks in 2022 and 2023. He joined the NFL in 2021 with the Los Angeles Chargers.
From 2015 to 2018, Yarbury appeared in 49 games as a defensive lineman for Wake Forest. He totaled 116 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, two pass deflections, and one fumble recovery.
The loss of Yarbury will be felt long after he's gone, but Charlton has welcomed back a dominant pass rusher who has played in the NFL. It may be too early to see him in the starting lineup this early in the season, but if he does make the roster, Charlton will be one of the top defensive linemen in the UFL.
Birmingham still needs to make a final decision on its roster, with UFL teams required to have 50 players in place by Saturday.
