The Russell Wilson era is officially over
-
The Broncos waived Wilson, who signed a one-year, league-minimum contract with the Steelers, meaning Denver will pay him the remaining $37.79 million in salary in 2024. The Broncos will be paid $53 million this season.
So what are the plans at quarterback?
-
Some of the other free agents signed: Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Jameis Winston. Several QBs were also traded, including Justin Fields and Sam Howell.
-
Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jaden Daniels could be drafted in a 1-2-3 in April, putting the Vikings in position to trade for a QB. Denver can't acquire Williams, Maye, Daniels or JJ McCarthy without a trade.
-
Speaking of McCarthy, his connection to the Broncos has been heavily rumored, but will the Vikings win him over?
Russell Wilson wasn't the only notable departure.
2 more notes since last recording
-
db coach christian parker He left the team and joined the Eagles, reuniting with Vic Fangio. Vance Joseph remains in Denver, D.C. but The new DB coach jim leonhardt, has previously interviewed for the DC job with the Packers and Eagles (Green Bay even offered him the job). He wouldn't be shocked if Leonhardt becomes the Broncos' DC someday.
-
Broncos legendary linebacker Randy Gradishar, the famous “Orange Crush” anchor of the defense was elected to the Hall of Fame as a senior candidate. He is scheduled to be enshrined in his August month, and an announcement about the Hall of Fame game team should be made soon. Denver could be a contender in 2024, but he most recently played in a 2019 game.
What's next?
Perhaps signing a low-budget free agent here and there, followed by pro days, pre-draft visits, and maybe the NFL Draft at the end of April. Stay tuned for updates on mock drafts and prospect visits!
