The 2024 NFL Draft went away for the Dallas Cowboys, but one or two things probably surprised you. It wouldn't have been a shock to see the Cowboys seriously invest in their offensive line or acquire a linebacker and wide receiver at some point. It would have been nice if the running backs had been addressed, but for the most part teams found bodies in serious positions.
We'll soon be talking about choosing a pet cat for training camp, but today I'm going to talk about something different. Who is your favorite draft pick and why?
1st Place: Tyler Guyton, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma
Maybe it all went downhill for you after the Cowboys took the left tackle of the future at No. 29 overall. It's natural to be excited about the future that Guyton has to offer, but considering he's still a raw prospect, he'll need time to develop.
The best thing about Guyton's pick was when it happened. Dallas traded down in the first round and acquired a third round selection in the process, but still came through with a very solid tackle. Considering the track record of the team's first-round offensive linemen, picking Guyton as a favorite would be a smart choice.
2nd Place: Marshawn Kneeland, Delaware, Western Michigan
The Cowboys kicked off Friday with a pass rusher, which was a bit of a surprise. You can never have enough players coming off the edge, but it wasn't necessarily a position that was a top priority for teams going into the draft.
Still, Marshawn Nyland is a guy that many draft analysts really loved. Consider he was 32nd on Dane Brugler's big board. The Athletic.
Like Sam Williams two years ago, Nyland will have to wait a bit before seeing any serious snaps on defense. But maybe he doesn't have to wait to be chosen as your favorite.
3rd Place: Cooper Beebe, G/C, Kansas State
This is probably the clear winner, and for good reason. Cooper Beebe was a great pick, and the fact that he came via the selection Dallas originally acquired in a trade down made it even more appealing.
The Cowboys need a new starting center, and Beebe is one potential answer. He's a tone-setter who can make a big contribution, and Dallas hopes that's the centerpiece.
3rd place: Marist Liufau, LB, Notre Dame
In most cases, the Cowboys achieved great value with each pick compared to the consensus board. One of the only exceptions in this sense was the nomination of Marist Liufo.
Did the Cowboys lose to the Green Bay Packers because of poor linebacker play? Yes. Would we have wanted to see them seriously invest in that position since then? Yes. Do you think Liufou seriously answers both of these questions? Maybe.
5th place: Kaylen Carson, CB, Wake Forest
The Cowboys traded for cornerback Eric Scott Jr. in last year's draft, and while they're already bullish on cutting him, the team clearly wants another spot, and that one is Kaelen. Found it in Carson.
Carson is a player who forces receivers in coverage to make tough catches, which is clearly a desirable quality in a defensive back. This roster doesn't have a fourth cornerback that comes to mind after the starters, so Carson might think he can compete there.
6th place: Ryan Flournoy, WR, SE Missouri State
Yards after the catch are very important, and Ryan Flournoy is counting on someone who can provide that for the Cowboys. He has pet cat characters written all over his body.
Similar to corner, there appears to be an opening around the fourth spot on the wide receiver depth chart. Jaylen Brooks will have the inside track as far as any competition is concerned, but Flournoy seems destined to make play after play during training camp, making us demand that our team use him more. It's so much so.
7th place: Nathan Thomas, OT, Louisiana Lafayette
Who is the swing tackle on this team right now? It's hard to answer that question right now. It seems rich to think Nathan Thomas could step into that role right away, but he seems like a project player that Dallas hopes can develop to that level.
7th: Justin Rodgers, DT, Auburn
Truth be told, the most interesting name among defensive tackles right now is last year's first-round rookie, Maji Smith, so Justin Rodgers seems like a player you don't see very often. But he's an athlete in the middle of the defensive line who could end up making some difference. That's all you can ask for from an early seventh-round pick.
