Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson's Statement on the Death of Former Congressman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Today, our nation, state, and city have lost a statesman, a pioneer, and a champion.
And I lost a dear friend, confidant, and mentor.
I first met Eddie Bernice Johnson when I was in high school. At the time, she was new to Congress, but she had served in the Texas Legislature for 20 years and was new to politics and policymaking.
Since then, Dallas and the state have grown and changed at an incredible pace. But Washington has always had stable, determined leaders who fight for their communities and represent our interests. Eddie Bernice Johnson drafted and co-authored more than 177 of his bills that became law, working with both Republicans and Democrats to get the job done for Dallas, our region, and our state. I did. She was the most effective congressman in Dallas history. No one brought more federal infrastructure money back to our city. No one has fought more for the interests and safety of our communities and residents. And no one knew how to successfully navigate Washington for the people of Dallas.
After a distinguished 30-year career on Capitol Hill, I was hoping to return home to spend more time with her. It's clear she still has the same enthusiasm and passion for public service that originally inspired her to become the first nurse to be elected to both the Texas State House and Congress. was.
She touched the lives of countless people, including myself, both personally and professionally. I am devastated by her death and heartbroken for her. Her thoughts and prayers are with her family and her loved ones. May she rest in the peace she deserves at the end of her full life, and may her legacy endure long in Dallas and the country she helped shape. like.

So she made it clear that she was here to get things done. She was waiting for no one to do what she could do for herself. What a fierce woman she was to Dallas!
As the only African American woman on the City Council, I will work with the federal government as a partner to address the many issues facing our city, including transportation, veteran care, small business financing, and other critical areas. I highly appreciated her advice on the importance of things. . Most importantly, it emphasized the need to embrace diverse groups to achieve our goals.
Sending prayers and blessings to her family as they prepare for her return home.
