Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys may soon find out that being single isn't as good as being married.
Elliott, who was one of the best running backs in the NFL early in his career, was released by Dallas ahead of the 2023 season. This came after the three-time Pro Bowler failed to gain 1,000 yards in two of his final three seasons with the Cowboys.
As for Dallas, head coach Mike McCarthy and others were ready to move forward last season with a young running back in Tony Pollard. Add in Elliott's bulging cap number and the writing was on the wall. Pollard struggled in RB1 duties without Elliott, averaging just 4.0 yards per rush.
As for Zeke, he served as the primary backup to LaMondre Stephenson with the New England Patriots last season. The former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year had a career-low 642 yards on short-yardage assignments.
Against this background, we have heard reports that there is a possibility of the group re-forming after a one-year hiatus.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson We first reported Wednesday that Elliott and his agent were at the Cowboys' facility, meeting with Dallas leadership. Given the Cowboys' needs and the lack of interest in Elliott on the NFL free agent market, there's a good chance a deal can be finalized soon.
- Ezekiel Elliott stats: 8,904 yards rushing, 2,649 yards receiving, 11,553 total yards, 85 TDs.
Elliott, 28, will be far from the cure for the Cowboys' running back woes after the aforementioned Pollard left for the Tennessee Titans in NFL free agency.
But depth is certainly needed here. Rico Doodle (331 yards) has been the Cowboys' leading return rusher since preseason.
Indeed, Dallas will likely attack this position in the upcoming NFL Draft. But it wouldn't be surprising if something happened on this front soon after that.
