“Dan is a highly valued member of our coaching staff,” McCarthy said. “So he will proceed with the process.”
Quinn's pending decision will have a major impact on the defensive side of the ball, especially in relation to McCarthy's plans for the assistant coaching staff under Quinn.
McCarthy said those meetings and discussions are expected to begin later this week, and that the schedule will definitely respect the “process” Quinn has in place regarding interviews.
“Let's get it started [soon]'' McCarthy said. “At this point, some of those conversations will be preliminary, but we're moving in that direction. Obviously, this is a time where there are other opportunities, and we're working on them every day. I’m planning on going.”
Even if Quinn stays, it's unclear whether the coaching staff will be the same in 2024, given how McCarthy has moved members around (and in and out) over the past four seasons to upgrade his staff. Two of several examples that remain unknown (e.g. Joe) include Philbin to Mike Solari and Mike Nolan to Dan Quinn.
If Quinn chooses to step down, discussions with the assistant defensive coaches will obviously take on a different tone here and there right away, with the possibility of one or more promotions being on the table, and subsequent related… Decisions will also be made.
But for now, it's a waiting game, but it won't last much longer.
