The 2024 NFL Draft is here!
The Dallas Cowboys selected Oklahoma offensive lineman Tyler Guyton with the 29th pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night. Dallas dropped five spots while targeting a group that lost two starting pitchers to free agency.
The Cowboys sent the 24th overall pick to Detroit and added a third-round pick earlier on. This trade gave Dallas four picks in the top 100.
The Lions took Alabama cornerback Terion Arnold with the 24th pick.
Guyton played primarily right tackle in his two seasons with the Sooners after starting his college career not far from TCU, home of the Cowboys.
Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton said of joining Dallas: “I talked a lot with the Cowboys. I felt like they wanted me to be one of them. I really love the Cowboys. I couldn't be more excited. There was nothing to do.” Cowboys first round draft pick.
Last month, the Cowboys lost two starters on the offensive line as left tackle Tyron Smith, an eight-time Pro Bowler, and center Tyler Biadasz signed with the New York Jets and Washington Commanders.
With those departures, and right guard Zach Martin's future uncertain after his contract expires in 2025, offensive linemen are likely targets.
The addition of Guyton could allow the Cowboys to keep 2022 first-round pick Tyler Smith at left guard. Tyler Smith spent most of his rookie season filling in for an injured Tyron Smith and was moved to left guard last season.
Who is Tyler Guyton?
The 6-7, 322-pound pitcher was drafted after spending four seasons in college, two of them at Norman University.
He played in 1,064 games in his career after spending his first two seasons at TCU as an offensive lineman and occasional H-back for the University of Oklahoma. In 2023, he earned All-Big 12 honors from the league's head coaches and started 14 of 20 games as a Sooner. All but one of his starts came at right tackle, guarding left-handed QB Dillon Gabriel.
According to his OU profile, Guyton has allowed just two sacks on 548 career pass-blocking plays.
