There have been reports for over a year that Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are negotiating a contract extension.
Despite all this, nothing has come of fruition. This sparked rumors that Prescott would very likely play out the final year of his contract and test for NFL free agency next March.
For Dallas, the problem is clear. Does owner Jerry Jones and others think the current NFL MVP runner-up is capable of leading this team to a Super Bowl win? The playoff results under Coach Dak seem to paint a different picture.
The Boys also need to look at the upcoming quarterback market and determine if they can find an upgrade from Prescott next offseason. Early in the process, that seems highly unlikely. Dallas had been in the running for a potential quarterback to replace Prescott in the 2024 NFL Draft. No team was selected.
Everything remains up in the air between Prescott and the Cowboys regarding their long-term marriage. He did nothing to quiet it down Thursday.

Dak Prescott admits no progress in contract talks with Dallas Cowboys
Asked if there had been any progress in negotiations, Prescott said, “Not necessarily,” according to the Dallas Morning News. “Obviously there are still conversations going on. We recognize that what Jerry (Jones) said and everything he said is unfounded, and communications are going back and forth.”
Certainly communication is key. However, if there is no progress on these negotiations, there will be growing speculation that Prescott's marriage to the Cowboys could soon come to an end.
As for Prescott's reaction to Jones' previous comments, the longtime Cowboys owner said it in April.
“I want to see more leaves fall. I want to see more action. It's called an option quarterback. I've spent my life (playing) as an option quarterback. I want to see more cards played. I want to see it.”
Jones talks about contract negotiations with Dak Prescott
Jones' idea here is not to set the market on a quarterback with a new contract for Prescott. Rather, he would like to respond to an ever-evolving market. That certainly complicates things.
Jacksonville Jaguars star Trevor Lawrence and Miami Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa are both considering contract extensions this offseason. San Francisco 49ers starter Brock Purdy will be eligible for his first extension next offseason and will likely become the highest-paid quarterback in league history.
The disadvantages of it are obvious. The longer this situation drags on, the more likely it is that Prescott will quit the Cowboys after next season.
