Dak Prescott is in the final year of his contract with the Dallas Cowboys and will become a free agent next offseason unless the two sides agree to an extension.
The Dallas Cowboys would like to lock up star quarterback Dak Prescott on a long-term deal, but there doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency on either side at this point.
The Cowboys have previously expressed their commitment this offseason, being adamant that they view the signal-caller as the future of the team and won't let him walk away. However, if Prescott's new contract is finalized, he is expected to join the ranks of the NFL's highest earners.
While the Cowboys are itching to make deals, they're also keeping an eye on the salary cap and accommodating other key players like standout pass rusher Micah Parsons and dynamic wideout CeeDee Lamb. You need enough space to do so. Talks regarding a new contract have not yet begun, but Prescott said he spoke with owner Jerry Jones about a month ago.
Prescott commented: “I'm focused on the here and now, where I am. That's always who I am. Whenever people ask me, it's always about now and tomorrow will be better. And I… We've been doing this all along.'' We've been in situations like this before, so it's okay in any situation to bet on yourself and play out the year at that point. ”
If the Cowboys don't sign Prescott to a new contract this season, they could be at risk for a lot of money. Without an extension, Prescott would be free to hit the open market next offseason, allowing another team to acquire him without giving up a draft pick.
Prescott's staggering $55 million in cap impact this year made the possibility of a trade loom large ahead of the 2024 season. A contract extension could dramatically reduce that number and free up funds to reward Parsons and Lamb. However, the Cowboys' commitment to keeping Prescott long-term is questionable, as talks have not progressed yet.
And while he admitted he was not worried about the lack of negotiations over a new contract, he hinted that he could leave the team after this season. His statement was: “I wouldn't say I'm afraid of being here or not. To be frank, I'm not afraid of either situation. I love this game and I love playing it. I love doing that and I love improving myself as a player.''I have teammates around me. ”
“Right now I'm with the Dallas Cowboys. That's where I want to be, that's where I belong, that's my focus. And once this season is over, where we are and where we're going to be in the future. We'll see if it lasts…and if no, we'll go from there.”
The 30-year-old is coming off his most productive 2023 season, throwing 36 touchdowns and just nine interceptions, and is aiming for a high-paying spot.
