“I'm focused on the present moment,” Prescott said. “Once negotiations start and real talks happen, we can talk about ending it. But at this point, I'm worried about whether it's going to get better. At this point, I'm just going to talk about it with my agent and Jerry.” If negotiations start, I will obviously be more involved.”
Negotiations haven't gotten to the point where Prescott and the team have begun negotiations, but Prescott was able to meet with Jerry Jones in recent weeks to discuss both sides' positions.
“I've talked to Jerry, so obviously I understand our position,” he said. “Jerry said the same thing, so there's no gray area in that sense. We had a great conversation and aligned our minds and confirmed where we are at this point.”
With the potential for a high cap hit on his new deal, Prescott is mindful of the need to build a team around him when contract negotiations begin.
“I'm not necessarily trying to be the highest paid person,” he said. “We're going to wait until negotiations start, but obviously I want to put this team in the best possible situation.”
Prescott isn't the only star being talked about for a contract extension in the middle of the offseason, as CeeDee Lamb held off on voluntary OTAs last week as he awaits a new contract.
Regardless of whether Lamb is immediately eligible for an extension, Prescott said the two will put in the necessary work this offseason to be ready to take the field in 2024.
“We're going to do some work,” Prescott said. “I have been in touch with CeeDee, and maybe a deal will be done, but if not, I guarantee you that we will still find plenty of time to do a job that we are happy with.” Masu.”
The lack of activity this offseason goes far beyond Prescott and Lamb's contract extensions. The team has signed just two outside free agents, with stars like Tyron Smith and Tony Pollard finding new careers.
For Prescott, there is no disruption to his offseason strategy as he continues to focus on the players in the locker room.
“Honestly, I look at the players we've got and we have a lot of great players,” he said. “There's a lot of good stuff coming back in that locker room. I believe in them and we've always done well in terms of getting some guys in the draft.”
Believing in the now seemed to be the theme of Prescott's availability. He maintains that the message of staying in the present is always the same regardless of contract status, but this time the context makes the message more ambiguous about what his future holds.
For him, whether it's Dallas or other places down the road, he's ready.
“I wouldn’t say I’m scared of being here or not,” he said. “Right now with the Dallas Cowboys… Once the season is over, we'll know where we are and if it's possible in the future. If not, we'll go from there.”
