Earlier this week, the NFL made several important announcements regarding the 2024 season. Hip drop tackles are prohibited and imagining how they would be done is a nightmare in itself. We have now introduced a completely new kickoff system that John Fassel helped bring to fruition. This should lead to exciting moments throughout the season and hopefully interesting opportunities for players like Kavonte Turpin.
Some of the things the NFL discussed weren't about specific rules, but about specific rules. when. Christmas Day to be exact. Even though Christmas 2024 falls on a Wednesday, the NFL is moving toward playing games on that day. Two of them specifically.
I discussed all of the recent rule changes with Arrowhead Pride's Stephen Cerda on the latest episode. TGIF Soccer On the SB Nation NFL Show, we spent a lot of time talking about the whole Christmas Day game situation.
It's not unusual for the NFL to schedule a Christmas Day game on a date that makes sense compared to the league. The Dallas Cowboys themselves play several games on Christmas Day, and in fact, personally speaking, the first game I went to see was on Christmas Day (against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2006… (no need to talk about it).
The Cowboys have played on Christmas Eve each of the past two seasons, and also in 2011 and 2017, but you have to go back to 2010 to find them playing on Christmas Day.That was a terrible game in a lost season. both Jon Kitna and Stephen McGee took snaps at quarterback for Dallas.
It's understandable that most people would object to a Christmas Day game, given the opportunity to attend a Christmas Day game with family and friends, but the idea of watching a Cowboys game under exactly those circumstances. It is certainly possible that there are people who like it. We're all used to seeing the Cowboys play on another holiday, Thanksgiving, but it's unfamiliar to most of the fan base, so perhaps they find the idea of Dallas playing on Christmas too strange. I don't think you'll find it unpleasant.
However, please be careful. With Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday, the amount of rest needed (in the NFL's eyes) would include playing a game one day earlier the week before. This means the team will (likely) move from a Sunday game to a Saturday game, then play a Christmas Day game on Wednesday. It's very difficult to do that in general and it's obvious that this happens when every win is so important compared to the big picture of the playoffs.
But let's hear what you have to say. Who wants to watch the Cowboys play on Christmas?
