Mike McCarthy will return as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys for the 2024 NFL season, but the 60-year-old will not receive a contract extension, according to reports.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy faces a big challenge next season after the team decided not to extend his contract. After a blowout loss at home to the Green Bay Packers in the NFL playoffs, many thought owner Jerry Jones would be looking for a new coach for 2024 and beyond.
But last week, Jones announced that McCarthy would return next season. However, ESPN reported that the 60-year-old will not receive an extension and will coach the Cowboys in 2024 on an expiring contract. McCarthy appears to have one more chance to win the team's coveted Super Bowl title, giving him the ultimate challenge of continuing to work beyond next season.
McCarthy went 42-25 as the Cowboys' head coach, winning an impressive 62.7% of his games. No coach in franchise history has had a better record. However, once the playoff season began, his magical touch seemed to disappear, leaving him with just a 1-3 record in four seasons.

McCarthy's contract is up for renewal next year, which could be difficult if a vacancy arises on his staff. It also remains to be seen how the players will react if the team does not perform as expected due to his contract situation.
Under McCarthy's leadership, Dallas secured 12 wins for three consecutive seasons. The only other teams to have had this much success before were the iconic teams of the 1990s. But not making it to the conference championship is a bitter pill to swallow. Despite this setback, McCarthy believes he can take home a championship ring.
McCarthy recently told fans: “We have an incredible fan base and I'm sure they're unhappy. We're very disappointed.
“I'm disappointed in them. I'm disappointed in our performance. But my message is this: We've established a championship program. It's not a world championship yet.”
“We know how to win. We know how to train to win. We have the right people. But we're still not above the mark of winning in the playoffs. We're sitting here talking. It's very disappointing to be there. But I know how to win.'' I have absolute confidence in that and that's why I'm standing here today.
McCarthy continued, “I came here to win a championship. I didn't come here to get another contract or anything else. Win a world championship. “I came to Dallas to do that.”
With only one season left, only time will tell if McCarthy can achieve his goals.
