There's still time until the 2024 NFL Draft, but it's never too early to start looking ahead. There will likely be mock drafts here and there on the Monday after this year's draft, but it will be a completely wasted exercise as we have no idea how next NFL season will play out. But we're at a stage where we can partially predict how some things will be when it's all over in 2025. One of his is a compensatory nomination.
Following the results of last year's free agency period, the Cowboys acquired two comp picks in this year's draft, but as free agency is currently underway (in terms of negotiations) future information is partially unknown. know.
The good folks at Over the Cap project that they will get a compensatory pick in 2025. The Cowboys are currently projected to pick up three wins, two in the fifth round and one in the sixth.
OTC also projects that the Cowboys will have $97.1 million (effectively $88 million) in salary cap space next offseason, which puts them in a good position to make additions to the roster. However, assuming the Cowboys are successful in negotiating an extension or two this offseason, that would obviously have a big impact on the situation. As mentioned above, there is plenty of time until next season.
The Cowboys are well known for coveting compensatory picks, so it makes sense that they don't want to risk them in free agency this year. Obviously, no team should make a decision in the name of not jeopardizing their compensation plan, but let's see if Dallas does something to jeopardize a future pick.
