Throughout the first 24 hours of the NFL's legal tampering period, the Cowboys' front office remained inactive while other teams around the league announced numerous deals.
DALLAS — The NFL's free agency period begins with the start of a legal tampering period in which teams can begin negotiations with representatives for unrestricted free agents before free agency officially begins, and ” It begins.”
Although no contracts can be entered into or signed during the legal tampering period, deals can be agreed upon and will often begin to be reported. The legal tampering period began at noon Monday, and the free agent frenzy reached fever pitch. NFL officials sent out a flurry of tweets Monday afternoon and evening, with many teams announcing numerous moves.
However, one team that has drawn criticism online for not announcing any additions and seemingly being dormant is the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys re-signed defensive tackle Carlton Davis on March 6, but as of this writing they have not announced any additional free agent players. Dallas has seen many players leave the organization and sign with other teams.
Running back Tony Pollard has agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans, and the Washington Commanders have agreed to trade center Tyler Biadasz and defensive end Dorance Armstrong.
Meanwhile, Dallas' lack of activity on the free agent market has led to criticism of owner Jerry Jones on social media, especially after his comments about being “all in” for 2024.
The Athletic's Dallas Cowboys reporter John Machota reshared a video of Jones talking about his “all-out” comments at the NFL combine in Indianapolis last week.
“Your definition of 'all in' and my definition are not the same,” Jones said. “But I'm trying to win this year's game with my decision.”
Rick Gosselin, a longtime Cowboys and NFL reporter for the Dallas Morning News, gave the other side's perspective: “The first week is when all the stupid money is spent.” Gosselin described Monday's move as “panic spending.”
Dallas announced its first free agent move on Tuesday. Long snapper Trent Sieg. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler first reported Sieg's agreement. According to ESPN NFL Nation's Todd Archer, Zeke has agreed to a one-year contract.
