Initial rankings for the 2024 season have the Dallas Cowboys outside of the top five.
Super Bowl XV is over, and to everyone's shock, the Kansas City Chiefs remain world champions. Life is good if you are part of a dynasty. We once knew that.
The focus for the other 31 teams has clearly shifted to making sure they are the only happy team at the end of the 2024 season, and that will be evident soon at things like the NFL Combine and the 2024 NFL Draft. Dew. As the dust from last season begins to fully settle and we peel back the plastic film from the new season, we will be able to see who will be good again, who will surprise us, and who will regress.
On Monday morning, ESPN released its offseason power rankings and, shockingly, the Dallas Cowboys weren't in the top five.
2023 records: 12-5
Describe the offseason in three words: try again
With coach Mike McCarthy entering the final year of his contract and Dak Prescott potentially in the same position, the Cowboys are looking to end their Super Bowl drought next season and will do so this offseason. I need to prepare. The Cowboys have won 36 regular season games over the past three years, but only one game in the playoffs. If McCarthy doesn't have the playoff success he had with the Packers and Prescott doesn't get past the divisional round for the first time in his career, the Cowboys could be looking at a complete rebuild in 2025. A complete overhaul is expected this offseason, but the pressure is on to build a Super Bowl team. — Todd Archer
Indeed, the Cowboys have been one of the more consistent teams in the NFL over the last 1,000 days or so, going 12-5 in three straight seasons. Unfortunately, they have only won the playoffs once in that span.
The blurb here points out that Mike McCarthy is entering a contract year, which already casts an interesting cloud over the season. The paper also notes that Dak Prescott could join him in that role, but it seems more likely that he will receive a contract extension from the team sooner rather than later.
Below are the top 10 teams in the strength rankings.
- baltimore ravens
- kansas city chiefs
- san francisco 49ers
- detroit lions
- buffalo bills
- miami dolphins
- dallas cowboys
- philadelphia eagles
- houston texans
- green bay packers
The Cowboys are seventh overall but third among NFC teams. They only chase their arch-rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Detroit Lions, whom Dallas managed to beat in the penultimate week of the regular season (somewhat controversially, admittedly). . However, it's also worth mentioning that Green Bay was the last team in the top 10 to pick him up in the Wild Card round, when he was taken by the Packers.
A lot will change by the time the regular season begins, but for now, the Cowboys are expected to rejoin the team.
