Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it clear that he wants to keep Dak Prescott in Dallas, but he has not yet committed to the quarterback long-term.
Jerry Jones isn't ready to sign Dak Prescott to a new long-term contract just yet, despite his eight-year tenure with the Dallas Cowboys.
Jones is adamant about keeping Prescott in Dallas. However, NFL fans remain reluctant to give Prescott an extension, and speculation continues about the Cowboys potentially searching for a new QB in the upcoming draft.
Prescott's current contract with Dallas runs until the end of the 2024 season, the final year of a four-year deal worth $160 million (£128.4 million). However, there has been no public discussion about extending his contract to secure his future with the team.

“If the timing isn't right around here, it's because I'm not ready yet,” Jones told ESPN about the team's contract negotiations. When asked directly about Prescott, Jones explained that the team has done everything possible to have the offensive talent to support him.
“Dak has enjoyed some of the best supporting casts we could have placed around him during a career that we are all proud of,” he continued. “In order to move forward, we have to mitigate that. That's the fact. That's the rule. That's our challenge, and in order to be successful, we need Dak to be the Cowboys quarterback. That's the thing. I don't have time to blink.” ”
Jones praises Prescott's on-field ability and potential, speaking frequently in the media and on his podcast, particularly highlighting his accomplishments last season. Prescott showed remarkable improvement as reflected in his performance last season, which included a 105.9 passer rating, 4,516 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions.
A hands-on owner, Jones also recognizes coach Mike McCarthy's influence on Prescott's development, especially considering both players have contract years coming up in 2024. However, Jones pointed to the financial hurdles facing the team and suggested the contract may have to be cut. Returns to supporting Prescott due to salary cap restrictions.

The Cowboys face a bit of a financial squeeze, as they have a variety of needs to address and only have about $6.3 million in cap space in 2024. The NFL has announced a hefty $255m (£204.7m) salary cap for the 2024 season, a significant increase from the previous year.
Prescott's contract will take up a significant portion of the Cowboys' salary cap, which will be worth a whopping $61.92m (about £49.7m) in 2024 if things remain unchanged.
The Cowboys also face the challenge of retaining rising stars like Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb, who will soon extend beyond their rookie contracts. Parsons made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons and had an impressive 2023 season with 14 sacks, 64 total tackles, and one forced fumble.
Lamb had a standout season last year, leading the league with 135 receptions in 2023 and earning his first All-Pro team selection. Lamb, who has a fifth-year option worth $17.9 million (approximately £14.4 million) in 2024, is considering top-level receiver compensation, but Parsons has similar sentiments, with Parsons is waiting for Lamb's contract to be resolved before working on his own contract.
