Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance has been the subject of much discussion as trade rumors with NFC rival Minnesota Vikings have been circulating around the league. If the Vikings don't bring back Kirk Cousins as the starter, the next solution could be a trade for Lance. According to Rich Eisen, one of the rumors at the NFL Scouting Combine was that Minnesota could trade Trey Lance and a mid-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys. This further fuels speculation that Cousin's term may be over.
According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the Atlanta Falcons have made it a priority to pursue Kirk Cousins as their next starting quarterback after he becomes a free agent. The Vikings appear to be in a difficult situation to select a quarterback with the 11th pick in this year's draft. Some reports predict that the first four picks in the draft will all be quarterbacks. Therefore, all of the top quarterbacks will likely be gone by the time the Vikings make their pick.
The trade could take place on the second day of the NFL Draft, when teams make picks. However, if the Vikings want to take a chance, they could move up via trade. Minnesota will likely have to give up a lot to break into the top five. That's something they'll likely avoid, so Lance could be a backup option to bring Dallas in for a trade offer.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance has been linked to NFC rival Minnesota Vikings in a trade
Trey Lance could be a good fit for Minnesota
Lance spent the 2023 season as the Cowboys' third-string quarterback after being acquired in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers late in the preseason. He appeared in only eight games with the 49ers over the past three seasons, but never took the field as Dallas' quarterback. The Minnesota native attended high school in Minnesota before enrolling at North Dakota State University, and he has local ties to the team. Lance never had a real chance as a long-term starter until Brock Purdy took over QB duties in San Francisco.
This could be a great opportunity for Lance to return home and finally get a chance to be the Vikings' starting quarterback. He completed 55% of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in eight games. Lance remains an interesting prospect for many teams around the league, but he may now move on to get the opportunity he wants. The Vikings may view Lance as a player with high potential.
The Cowboys have kept Lance around for so long that he's getting a bonus to stay with the team. Minnesota could flip that and trade to Dallas for a third-round pick. According to reports, Cousins and his family are already considering a move to Atlanta and may have discussions. Lance could fit seamlessly into Minnesota's offense, which also includes star receiver Justin Jefferson.
Can the Cowboys make this trade happen?
With contract negotiations continuing with Dak Prescott, there's a 50-50 chance the Cowboys will sign Lance. But Prescott is confident a deal will eventually be reached. There are rumors that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may let him fulfill his contract without extending him. Prescott has one year left on his contract and carries a $59.4 million cap hit.
Jones said the team is “fully committed,” but what's stopping him from signing a deal with the Cowboys? Perhaps the front office is waiting to see how Prescott performs under pressure next season. Prescott will be a free agent next offseason. His postseason success likely keeps him out of negotiations with the Cowboys.
It might be time for Lance to be the starter in Dallas. If a deal doesn't go through, it probably means he could be promoted to second-team.
