The Dallas Cowboys weren't major players on the free agent market this offseason, but the team could have their sights set on a recently released wide receiver.
Former Jacksonville Jaguars wideout Zay Jones, the son of Dallas native and former Cowboys linebacker Robert Jones, will visit the Cowboys on Wednesday, a source familiar with his schedule told The Dallas Morning. News' Michael Gehlken.
The Jaguars released the veteran receiver last week, bringing five-time Pro Bowler Jarvis Landry to rookie minicamp five days after drafting LSU's Brian Thomas Jr. with the 23rd overall pick. It was released the next day after consent was given.
Jones was scheduled to count nearly $10.8 million against the salary cap in 2024, a hefty paycheck for someone projected to be, at best, the team's fourth receiver. Jacksonville will eat up $6.6 million in dead money this season to save $4.2 million.
Jones has 3,028 career receiving yards and 18 touchdowns in seven years with Buffalo, Oakland/Las Vegas and Jacksonville, but missed eight games last season with knee and hamstring injuries. He was also arrested on domestic violence charges, which were ultimately dropped.
He was in the final year of a three-year, $24 million contract that included $14 million guaranteed.
In Dallas, Jones could join a position group that parted ways with Michael Gallup, now with the Las Vegas Raiders, earlier this offseason.
Jones, a former second-round draft pick out of East Carolina, also recently met with the Titans and Cardinals, according to reports.
