A driver was seriously injured Wednesday when a fire truck responding to another crash struck him, Dallas Fire and Rescue said.
According to DFR, firefighters were called to a crash along the 2500 block of Robert B. Cullum Boulevard near Fair Park around 11:30 a.m.
Details of the accident have not yet been revealed, but two people involved in the accident were hospitalized.
A driver not involved in the original crash struck Engine 44 from behind around 11:40 a.m., according to DFR. The fire truck was blocking the scene when the driver was struck, DFR said.
The driver of the vehicle was ejected and suffered serious injuries. The driver's current condition is unknown.
The firefighter who was in the truck at the time of the collision suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized for evaluation. DFR said the firefighter is safe and expected to be released from the hospital soon.
Kim Montgomery, who survived a crash at the same location last year, said she wouldn't be surprised to see another crash on the winding Robert B. Cullum road.
”[They] I ignored a stop sign and wrecked my car, but it's a miracle that I'm still alive, and I had to buy a new car, but there was another car accident in the same place. Something needs to be done,” Montgomery said.
The incident comes as the city continues to look for ways to improve safety for first responders. In November, NBC 5 reported that DFR would add cut-off vehicles and other safety equipment to take the brunt of secondary collisions. Blockers are first deployed in highway crashes.
