Construction of office buildings and single-family homes has slowed this year, but construction hiring in Dallas-Fort Worth hasn't slowed.
D-FW led the nation in construction job growth for the 12 months ending in August, according to an analysis by Associate General Contractors of America. A total of 19,700 jobs were added in the construction sector during the year.
Over the same period, more than 60% of U.S. metropolitan areas experienced construction job growth.
“Construction employment is increasing in most locations, but contractors everywhere are having a hard time filling positions,” Ken Simonson, chief economist at the General Contractors Association, said in a new report. Although new office building starts have slowed significantly this year, D-FW continues to see construction starts for thousands of apartments and additional industrial space. Public sector construction is also expanding the employment base.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates D-FW added 154,800 jobs of all types in the year to August. New York City was the only city with higher employment growth for the year, adding 208,200 jobs.
