The Dallas Mavericks led the LA Clippers 3-2 through Game 5 of the first round series. While the NBA playoffs have traditionally resulted in lopsided series results, primarily in the Western Conference, that is not the case with the Mavericks' series.
The difference between a Mavericks win and a loss is clear. Offense wasn't that big of an issue outside of Game 1, but you can see the results of defense in the wins and losses column. For example, the Mavericks allowed 18 3-pointers to the Clippers in Game 1, but they ended up losing. The Clippers made 18 3-point shots in Game 4, but the Mavericks suffered their second loss in the series.
In Games 2, 3 and 5, the Mavericks allowed fewer than 10 3-pointers to the Clippers. For the Mavericks, who have shown improved defense throughout the series, success has been driven by forcing players off the line or forcing looks from beyond the arc.

An impressive offensive performance is expected from behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but the Clippers' defensive line will be limited without rim protection. He will help make a big impact on rookie Derek Lively II.
The rookie center out of Duke University showed great defensive performance in this series. The University of the NBA released statistics showing that while opponents were shooting within 6 feet of Lively's presence (mainly near the rim), he made 9 of 28 shots.
It's a small sample size, but if the Mavericks are going to force the Clippers to the rim and disrupt their offensive rhythm, Lively will need to be on the floor to provide a defensive presence.
The numbers support the eye test. Lively has been incredible defensively, showing he can cover the floor well and move to different spots while having the IQ to know where to be on the floor. He also adds vertical space on both sides of the floor, flying through the air to block shots on one end and finish lob passes on the other.
Lively has a chance to be the X-factor in Game 6 while the Mavericks look to end the series against the Clippers at home in Dallas.
