Thanks to 17 wins in 18 games just before the All-Star break, the Cavaliers leapfrogged Milwaukee to become the No. 2 seed in the East for the NBA playoffs. If the postseason were to start today, Cleveland would face the winner of the 7-8 play-in game (currently Orlando vs. Indiana).
Dallas is currently the No. 8 seed in the West, tied with No. 7 Sacramento and just a half-game behind No. 5 Phoenix and No. 6 New Orleans in the crowded Western Conference standings.
Mavericks' winning streak ends
Dallas briefly moved into the top six during the All-Star hiatus thanks to a seven-game winning streak, including three road wins (118-102 at Philadelphia, 119-107 at Brooklyn, and 122-108 at New York). But Sunday's 133-111 loss to Indiana ended that streak and sent the Mavs back to the play-in zone. Luka Doncic (33 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds) and Kyrie Irving (29 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists) were both solid offensively, and Dallas shot 45.2% from 3-point range, but the team's The defense was non-existent and gave the Pacers a pass. Shooting 55.9% from the field and grabbing 8 rebounds (46-38).
This will be the second and final meeting of the year for both teams. Cleveland won 113-110 at Dallas on Dec. 27, dominating the glass (57-37) thanks to an incredible 24-point, 23-rebound performance from center Jarrett Allen. Notably, Irving missed that game due to injury.
This injury-plagued season, Dallas ranks 11th in O rating (117.5) but only 21st in D rating (116.4).
Several Mavs are listed with minor illnesses on the team's injury report on Tuesday, but Dante Exum (9.2 PPG, 2.8 APG, 19.7 MPG) is the only one expected to be out of today's NBA lineup. .

Cavaliers stumble out of the gate after All-Star Game
Cleveland was the league's hottest team in the six weeks before the All-Star break, winning 18 of 20 games in that span. However, the Cavaliers have lost two of three games since returning, including a 116-109 loss at home to Orlando and a 104-97 loss to the injury-riddled 76ers in Philadelphia.
They managed to get back into the win column in the last tournament, but as favorites with 13.5 points, a 114-105 victory over lowly Washington won't attract attention.
Donovan Mitchell (28.1 PPG, 6.2 APG, 5.4 RPG) continues to spearhead Cleveland's offense and gets valuable secondary production from Darius Garland (18.2 PPG, 6.2 APG), but the defense is the team's It's a business card. The Cavs have moved up to second in the NBA in D rating (110.4) and are fourth in net rating (+5.4) despite ranking just 15th in O rating (115.9).
Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley are both averaging double-digit rebounds per game (10.6 and 10.0, respectively), and Cleveland ranks in the top 10 in rebounding percentage (51.0%).

Doncic's total points total is 32.5 O/U, which is still nearly two points below his season average (34.3 PPG) against the second-best defense in the league. Mitchell (25.5) is the highest of any Cavs player, and Allen (10.5) is the only player with double-digit rebound totals.
Mavericks vs. Cavaliers Prediction
Dallas had an off day last time out, but I believe in the team that general manager Nico Harrison has built. Acquiring 6-10 center Daniel Gafford from the Wizards at the deadline has already helped solve the Mavs' problems. Gafford averaged 12 rebounds per game in his first three games in a Dallas uniform (all wins). Tuesday night's outcome could look different if Cleveland can reduce the rebound differential that allowed them to leave Dallas with a win in December.
