Chief Eddie Garcia provided an update Monday afternoon on the Dallas police officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday, Nov. 16.
Last Thursday morning, a Dallas police officer was shot in the leg during a shootout with a murder suspect. The police officer is believed to be safe.
The officer was working with the U.S. Marshals Task Force on an execution at an apartment in the 9900 block of Adreta Boulevard around 6 a.m., according to the police department.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 20-year-old Jordan Owens, who was wanted for a murder that occurred Oct. 16 in the 9700 block of Forest Lane.
Police Chief Eddie Garcia said a preliminary investigation revealed that after about a three-minute search, task force members knocked and indicated they were at the apartment and announced their intention to execute the warrant.
“As they approached the residence, they knocked, made an announcement, and began to break through the door and were immediately met with gunfire from the suspect,” Chief Garcia said Thursday.
Police said officers broke through the front door and when the door opened, Owens fired shots at task force members.
A Dallas police task force member, Senior Corporal Edgar Morales, returned fire with a rifle, and the task force members moved downstairs, away from the apartment.
Morales was shot in the calf during the first exchange and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. He was treated and later released.
Owens left the apartment and was ordered to surrender. Police said the man did not respond, ran into the apartment and began throwing items out of the apartment window.
Officers found Owens with a handgun and fired again.
Dallas police called 911 to report that there were other people inside the apartment and that Owens was injured.
Members of the task force evacuated witnesses from the apartment and detained the suspect.
Officers administered first aid and Owens was taken to a local hospital.
The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.
An investigation revealed that four task force members fired their weapons during the incident.
No other officers or civilians were injured.
Owens was treated at a local hospital and was ultimately declared in stable condition.
He is expected to be charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant, as well as a warrant for capital murder.
The task force consisted of the Dallas Police Department, the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
