The Dallas Stars are expanding into Tarrant County. Yesterday, the professional hockey team and the Town of Northlake held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 225,000 square foot multipurpose athletic facility. The facility will be equipped with two NHL-compliant ice sheets and eight basketball courts that can be converted into 16 volleyball courts.
The $45 million facility, funded by a general obligation bond approved by Northlake voters in November, is expected to welcome an estimated 1.315 million visitors a year. The move marks a “first foray” into the Fort Worth area, as Dallas Stars President and CEO Brad Alberts put it. “This is a great way to not only spread the Stars brand, but to really continue what we do and provide quality youth sports facilities for hockey, basketball, volleyball and all of our athletes. I think it’s a method,” he said. In the metropolitan areas you want to play. ”
This milestone also marks another step for the Stars in pursuing multi-sport facility opportunities. He has installed eight youth ice rinks throughout North Texas, and the team acquired his 38,000-square-foot property in Lewisville in late 2022 called “The MAC.” It includes eight USA Volleyball regulation courts, four NBA regulation hardwood basketball courts, and a full concession and food court area.
And last November, the Stars and the City of Farmers Chapter announced construction of an 81,780-square-foot facility that will accommodate eight basketball courts or 16 volleyball courts with pickleball options. The $20 million Farmers Branch facility, financed with municipal bonds, is slated to become the home of Texas Advantage Volleyball, which was purchased by the Stars in 2022.
Alberts said StarCenter Multisport Northlake will be the first facility of its kind to host three sports under one roof. He also highlighted that the Stars recently announced a partnership with NY2LA Sports, a national basketball platform. “They intend to utilize our facilities to make Dallas their hub and bring the highest quality travel basketball tournaments to the DFW area,” Alberts said.
StarCenter Multisport Northlake will be built by Lee Lewis Construction and is scheduled to open in late fall 2025. Alberts said the venue will help fill the need to further expand competitive hockey in DFW and support other sports in the rapidly growing region.
“We want to take advantage of the growth in Texas as people move and businesses move in,” he said. “I think this is a perfect example of that as well. If we do anything else in the future, I think it's going to be very similar. Some of them may be outside of the DFW area. But , I think we're trying to check all those same boxes.”
