Here are recent NHL Playoff AP articles:
LAS VEGAS (AP) — It started with a breakthrough by Tyler Seguin, and shots came in waves to Las Vegas goaltender Adin Hill.
He stopped Seguin at close range, saved a rebound from Evgeny Dadonov, and stopped Seguin again.
This was Hill in last year's Stanley Cup championship game, helping the Golden Knights keep their hopes of back-to-back championships alive with a 2-0 win over the Dallas Stars on Friday night and a Game 7.
“In big games, you have to make big saves at important times,” Hill said. “That way we can win playoff games. I think our team learned last year, and every team that won, that goaltenders have to catch fire sometimes.”
The deciding game of the first round series will be played Sunday in Dallas.
Hill took just 23 shots for his first shutout since recording two shots in three games in early November. Noah Hanifin broke the scoreless tie at 9:54 of the third period, and Mark Stone sealed the victory with an empty-netter from 576 feet out with 18.9 seconds left.
It was the second game-winning goal of the series for Hanifin, who was acquired from Calgary on a trade deadline.
“I was really excited to get an opportunity on a team that has been winning since I was traded here,” Hanifin said. “There's a great culture here and I'm lucky to be a part of it. I have a good feel for my game and want to contribute as much as I can.”
It was a classic goalie battle, with Hill similar to the player who went 11-4 in last year's playoffs with a .932 save percentage and 2.17 goals allowed per game. However, Hill struggled late this season, so Logan Thompson won the starting job for the first four games of the series.
The Knights relied on Hill in Game 5, a 3-2 loss, and they relied on Hill again in this game.
“At the end of the year, Adin had a pretty good feeling about the game,” Knights manager Bruce Cassidy said. “You'll see in practice. The puck was just coming in. … He should be confident. He just pitched a shutout and made some really high-end saves. is.”
Meanwhile, Jake Oettinger made 28 saves and entered the series without a point in the third period and overtime. Hanifin's goal ended Oettinger's save streak at 60.
“We would have liked to have gotten a shutout tonight, but we're in this position right now and that's why we played so well during the regular season and were able to get a Game 7 at home when the time came.” said Oettinger. “The ball is in our court. We're on home ice, and now it's up to us to take care of business.”
The numbers are favorable for both teams heading into Game 7.
Vegas leads the series 2-0, and the Knights are 4-0 with that advantage. The Stars had never overcome such a deficit in nine tries since moving to Dallas. NHL teams overall are 351-55 when given early leads.
But no team has yet been able to solve Stars coach Pete DeBoer's problem in the seventh game. He is 7-0.
“There's nothing like Game 7,” DeBoer said. “That's what you grew up dreaming of playing for, and the next best thing is coaching among them.”
The match was intense from the start, with tension increasing as the match progressed, with both teams missing big scoring opportunities. The Golden Knights added star power with recording artist Shania Twain sounding the horn before the game and James Holzhauer of Jeopardy fame sounding the horn before the third game.
As expected given the circumstances, the Golden Knights hung out in the Stars' offensive zone early on and jumped out. Dallas didn't get its first shot on goal until 7:45 into the game, but the Knights had several chances, including a close-range shot from Nicolas Roy and a shot from Keegan Kolesar that hit the post. I couldn't make it into something. The first period was held scoreless.
The game stayed that way in the second period, but it wasn't for lack of action. Hill made three spectacular saves in that sequence and later received an assist from Stone, who deflected the puck from the goal line. Logan Stankoven missed an open net for the Stars, and Vegas' Jonathan Marchessault took a shot from the left circle that was tipped by William Karlsson, leading the crowd to believe the puck went into the net.
Hanifin finally broke through with an unassisted wrister from the right circle.
