DALLAS — No one can really prepare for a breakup.
“This is the first time I've lost a friend,” Mesquite resident Jose Vargas Jimenez said as he said goodbye to his friend Kevin Briones, 12.
“I didn't see him for a long time. I just wanted to make up for it one last time because I didn't see him,” Vargas Jimenez said.
Briones was killed and three others injured in Thursday morning's crash, police said.
The crash occurred around 8:40 a.m. near Caspian Drive and Lasater Road in the Mesquite area near Interstate 20 heading toward Seagoville.
Witnesses at the scene told WFAA they saw the SUV speeding before the crash. Dallas Police Department officials confirmed to WFAA that the male driver was speeding.
Off camera, Kevin's mother, Michelle Briones, said her son was the eldest of four children and had two younger brothers. He loved soccer.
Michelle said her other son was also in the car when Kevin died. They shouldn't have gotten up, Michelle said. They were supposed to be asleep.
Kevin would have turned 13 next month.
One of the injured children's siblings told WFAA that the driver and passenger were arguing when someone pulled the steering wheel and the SUV ran off the road. DPD officials confirmed that the hospitalized children said there was an altercation before the accident.
“They sped off and then they started arguing. He then started fiddling with the steering wheel and went off the road and hit a tree,” Jimenez said.
Dallas police confirmed that the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Police said one of the passengers, a 12-year-old male, died at the scene. The driver, a 12-year-old male, and two other passengers, an 11-year-old and a 12-year-old male, were taken to a local hospital in stable condition, authorities said.
“The bumper was in the middle of the road and the car was a mess. It was very sad. Very, very sad,” said Sharon Webb, a nearby resident who was driving by the accident scene.
Video footage from the accident scene showed the front of the vehicle was severely damaged and the windshield was also smashed.
Kevin and his brothers all attended New Era Boxing Gym at some point, coaches Jose Enrique Ramirez and Albert Mayo told WFAA.
“It really hurts,” Ramirez said in Spanish. “We got to know him. We knew how he laughed, how he played, what kind of person he was. That's why it's so hard to lose a child like this. It’s very painful.”
Coach Mayo said Kevin has a key role at the gym, which is less than a mile from the accident scene.
“It was just a sad day,” Mayo said. “Just knowing that this little kid wasn't able to live his life to the fullest.”
Throughout Friday, friends visited the crash site to pay their respects.
“We are still in shock. The memories of our brothers will never fade,” said friend Alexa Carrillo. Her brothers were close friends with all four boys.
“They used to go to our house and play,” said the friends' mother, Sulema Carrillo.
A GoFundMe has been created for Kevin, which is very real for his loved ones.
“I'm really sad that my brother and his family have to go through something. Not everyone can handle it right,” Alexa Carrillo said.
While reality resolves, so does the breakup.
“I couldn't even say goodbye. I just wanted to talk to him and talk a little bit,” Jimenez said.
