DALLAS — A man accused of fatally shooting four people in Dallas Sunday afternoon shot himself as authorities tried to arrest him, officials said.
Byron Carrillo, 21, fled the scene of the shooting, stole a car and headed south on Interstate 35 toward the Austin area, according to a police news release.
Police said officers spotted the man near Austin and began pursuing him, but he crashed into a ditch and fled on foot. The statement said Carrillo shot himself in the head as officers approached him. He died at the scene.
The first shooting occurred around 4:20 p.m. in the 9700 block of Royce Drive near St. Augustine Drive and Interstate 20, where police found five people shot. .
Police said three adults died at the scene and two other victims, a 15-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy, were taken to a hospital where the boy succumbed to his injuries.
The four deceased victims were identified by the Dallas County Coroner's Office as: Logan De La Cruz, 1; Vanessa de la Cruz, 20 years old. Karina Lopez, 33 years old. and Jose Lopez (50).
The family confirmed to WFAA that Karina Lopez and Jose Lopez are Vanessa Delacruz's parents and that Logan is Delacruz's son. They released photos of Karina Lopez (pictured left), Logan (center), and Delacruz (right).
An official cause of death has not yet been listed.
The teen was treated at a hospital and later released. A 13-year-old girl was in her home when the shooting occurred, but she was not injured.
Police said Carrillo had been identified as the suspect, but no further details about how the shooting occurred were released.
According to the victim's family, Carrillo was Vanessa de la Cruz's ex-girlfriend and Logan's father. Her family said Carrillo lived right next door to Vanessa's family and that Carrillo was known to be violent towards Vanessa, which led to her leaving Vanessa. , which is why she returned to her parents.
Carrillo was scheduled to wear an ankle monitor during the 2021 aggravated assault case, but “at some point before or immediately after the crime, he disconnected the ankle monitor,” according to a DPD release.
Carrillo's death is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
