DALLAS – The Dallas Police Department says a man shot and killed two people in his neighborhood, including a juvenile, early Tuesday morning. Police have not released the suspect's name, but his family identified him as 25-year-old Marlon Perkins.
The shooting happened just after 7:30 a.m. in the 3900 block of Happy Canyon Drive near Interstate 45 and Simpson Stewart Road, police said.
Officials told WFAA that the victims were shot by the suspect during an argument with their mother. When a neighbor allegedly tried to intervene in the fight, the suspect left the scene, returned with a gun and fired shots into the neighbor's home, these sources said.
While the Preites family living next door was getting ready for school, a mother and son from the neighborhood were fighting on the ground outside. The Preites rushed to help the mother.
”[They] I came here to help her. He sat on top of him and subdued him; [the suspect] I didn’t care about that,” said Steven Anthony, the mother’s longtime boyfriend.
“They started pushing [the suspect] I walked away and grabbed him, but then he started hitting everyone,” Justin Preites added.
Both families confirmed to WFAA that the suspect left the scene and returned eight minutes later with a gun. Anthony told WFAA that Perkins drove up to his neighbor's house and opened fire. There were bullet holes in the windows and front door of the house.
A man and a 12-year-old boy were shot at the address and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The Preites family confirmed to WFAA that the 12-year-old boy was Nazareth Preites and that the 20-year-old boy who was shot was a man named “Omar” who lived in the home.
“Everyone feels devastated. Everyone feels scared,” Justin Preites said.
“I apologized. I'm really sorry that that happened and that they had to intervene,” Anthony said.
Police announced that a person involved in the incident is currently in custody.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
