Shots are being exchanged ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, which could give NFL teams the firepower to take the next step as a franchise and power them into the playoffs and beyond.
And with this year's NFL Draft being held in Detroit, local newspapers delivered a dagger into the heart of Dallas, leaving a bit of a chill.
“Public Service Announcement: Today, as the football world, including fans of all 32 NFL teams, gathers in Detroit for the #NFLDraft, this is a reminder to Dallas Cowboys fans that the Detroit Lions have A perfect reminder that there are more NFC Championship games in between,” the Detroit Free Press tweeted.
This tweet is interesting in several ways.
First, it's pretty unusual to see a publication enter such a fray. Accounts that belong to a news organization as a whole are typically the least partisan and are built on journalistic principles that encourage neutrality so as not to affect the quality and fairness of the reporting that is being done.
The Free Press has tended to be a little lax about these principles since last year's playoff run.
Of course, this tweet is interesting for other reasons as well, in the context of the 2024 NFL Draft. For one thing, Detroit doesn't hold a ridiculously commanding lead over Dallas in NFC Championship Game appearances.
Detroit just appeared for the first time since 1991, and Dallas last appeared in 1995. But if you take the exploration a little further back, to an equally arbitrary timeline, say he's post-1992, the whole operation takes on a completely different look. . That would give Dallas four appearances in the NFC Championship Game compared to Detroit's one.
Additionally, if you want to go a little beyond a simple NFC Championship Game appearance and win a Super Bowl title, Dallas has a commanding lead. The Boys have won five Super Bowls in franchise history, while Detroit has yet to win one.
All four of Detroit's league championships came before the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.
So while the Detroit Free Press tweet is certainly entertaining and an undoubted shot over Dallas' bow, it probably doesn't carry as much weight as the organization would like.
Still, before the real work begins tonight, we have a little fun to do. 2024 NFL Draft.
