North Texas is an aviation hub, fertile ground for airlines and aerospace companies, as well as a place where people enjoy flying.
Dallas Business Journal knew that before we created our new list of top destinations and airlines for the Metroplex's two major airports, but we were still surprised by the data we uncovered.
Using data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, DBJ estimates that Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (known by the airport code “DFW”) and Dallas Love Field Airport (” Ranked the most popular destinations from DAL). Atlanta and Denver took the top two spots, each operating more than 9,000 flights. But when looking specifically at DFW, the top destination was Los Angeles.
We'll give you an overview of the top 10 here, but for more detailed data, check out the list of links below.
1. Total 9,860 flights between Atlanta, DFW and DAL
8. Orlando, Florida, 7,564
We also ranked the airlines departing from the two airports based on available seat miles. Seat miles are a measure of an airline's capacity, calculated by multiplying the number of seats by the distance traveled. This is also based on the 2023 schedule.
Of course, this part is not surprising. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines ranked first and second.
After that, it got even more interesting. Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines took third place, followed by Delta Air Lines in fourth place, followed by Qatar Airways in fifth place for its long-haul flights from North Texas to Doha.
