Dallas-Fort Worth has 21 companies on the latest Fortune 500 list, released June 4. Last year’s list had 24 companies from the region, but that’s down slightly this year, and there were some notable changes in the rankings.
The highest-ranked DFW-area company on the list is No. 9 McKesson Corp. (NYSE: MCK) with 2023 revenue of $276.7 billion, which comes as No. 7 Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) completed its relocation from North Texas to the Houston area last summer. McKesson, a pharmaceutical distribution and health care services and supplies company, relocated to North Texas from California in 2019.
The change may elicit a shrug from readers, since Exxon’s move was widely publicized. But it speaks to the hole it left. Exxon is a regular on the Fortune 500, one of only 49 companies to have made the list every year since its debut in 1955.
The biggest risers on the North Texas list were Fluor (NYSE: FLR), which jumped 38 spots from last year’s ranking to No. 265, and Yum China Holdings (NYSE: YUMC), which rose 37 spots to No. 368. Irving-based Fluor is a leading engineering and construction company, while Plano-based Yum China owns and operates fast-food chains such as KFC and Pizza Hut in the world’s second-most populous country.
The biggest drop in the DFW region among Fortune 500 companies was Builders FirstSource (NYSE: BLDR), which dropped 68 places from a year ago to No. 240. The Irving-based company reported sales were down about 25% last year. CEO Dave Rush said the business environment for 2023 is “challenging” and that “single-family home starts are declining significantly.”
There were 47 DFW-area companies in the expanded Fortune 1000. The average year-over-year revenue growth for those 47 companies was 4.2 percent, and the average change in profits was 6.9 percent.
The Fortune list ranks companies that are incorporated in the United States, operate in the United States, and file financial statements with government agencies, and may include many more than standard publicly traded companies. Companies are ranked by total revenue for each fiscal year, but Fortune also lists profits, assets, market value, number of employees, and more.
