FRISCO – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott recently announced a long-planned contract extension that would flatten his ballooned $59.4 million cap in 2024 while also calling the QB a “Cowboy for life.” He said his aim was to do so.
But positive stories aside, there were no positive developments. And that leads one to wonder if Jerry Jones' front office and Prescott and agent Todd France each have their own ideas here…which, in a way, suggests that they actually Does that mean we might agree on something?
It makes you wonder: What if Dallas was reluctant to give Prescott a monster $60 million per year contract, perhaps considering a “Blow It Up!” rebuild year in 2025…
At the same time, does Duck not want to go any further and is eyeing 2025 as an opportunity for a fresh start?
In other words, what if the Cowboys knew Dak could go free this year and were okay with that…while Prescott did so in a way that could potentially get him even more compensation on the open market? He is happy to “bet on himself.” One year from now?
“I'm definitely confident,” Prescott said recently when asked about the possibility of a contract extension. “It helps the team and it's important for the numbers… It's a process and both sides understand that. Everything is great. It's going to happen.”
Coincidentally, this was a more optimistic answer from Prescott than the one Jerry gave when he was at the NFL Scouting Combine.
“It's not necessary, but it can be worked out if everyone wants to work it out,” Jones said of Prescott's extension. “We can come in and get on the same page and see if we can come to an agreement. If we can't come to an agreement, what we have in place will work.”
In this theorized scenario, it only “works” in a limited way. Leaving Dak's cap hit alone will make 2024 roster building difficult and the locker room could become a lame duck ruin…but 2025 will benefit.
The Cowboys manage Dak in a uniquely business-like manner. Prescott has similar rights. After the 2023 season in which Prescott finished as runner-up for the league MVP award while throwing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions? If he repeats this while playing his final year, he will become the highest-paid free agent of all time.
And the Cowboys will get a fresh start in 2025.
Is this Dallas' plan? Is it Duck's? We discuss it here on Fish Podcast and Fish Report.
