The Green Bay Packers are having a very active 2024 offseason. In the first few days of free agency, they signed stars Josh Jacobs and Xavier McKinney to more than $100 million. The Packers' roster isn't perfect, with question marks in the safety, linebacker and cornerback rooms. There's still time until the 2024 NFL Draft, and the Green Bay Packers could make more moves in free agency.
Green Bay Packers could target newly released former Dallas Cowboys LB
Leighton Vander Esch was a standout first-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. In his rookie season, he totaled 113 solo tackles and two interceptions, posting an impressive PFF grade of 84.4. Unfortunately, this season was the best of his career as his neck injury lingered. After six seasons in the NFL and just 72 games, Vander Esch was released by the Dallas Cowboys.
According to sources, the Cowboys have notified LB Leighton Vander Esch that he will be released after failing a physical. He missed his last 12 games last year with a neck injury.

There's no question about the quality of Leighton Vander Esch's play, and when he's healthy, he's one of the best off-ball linebackers in the NFL. His neck injury has lingered since his college days, but some have speculated as to whether he can or should remain in the NFL. His intelligent play on the field is impressive, and since being drafted he has been one of the smartest and most talented players to step onto any NFL field.
If Leighton Vander Esch can stay healthy and healthy, the Green Bay Packers will have a lot of depth at the linebacker position. It is very likely that he decides to retire due to his problematic neck injury, especially the delicate nature of the injury. But if he continues to rehab his neck until later this year, he could sign with another team in need of a linebacker and make a big impact.
The Green Bay Packers aren't desperate for the No. 1 spot in the MLB, and Key Walker is ready to step into that role under head coach Jeff Hafley. A role with fewer snaps and less pressure may be the perfect environment for Leighton Vander Esch to thrive in the rest of his career.
