Former Jets coach Rex Ryan is on track to return to the NFL.
Ryan interviewed CBS Sports reported Wednesday that the Dallas Cowboys have discussed a defensive coordinator vacancy.
Ryan, 61, last coached in 2016, when the Buffalo Bills fired him as head coach before the final game of the season. He has been a football analyst for ESPN for the past seven years.
However, Ryan's name continues to come up in coaching rumors. He was rumored to be involved in the Broncos' defensive coordinator role last October, shortly after Denver gave up 70 points in Week 3 against Miami. Vance Joseph will remain as the Broncos' defensive coordinator.
The outspoken Ryan made a name for himself as the charismatic coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens' defense from 2005 to 2008, led by Hall of Famers Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
Ryan became the Jets' head coach in 2009 and led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game in both of his first two seasons. He had a 46-50 record over six seasons with the Jets, who fired him after a 4-12 season in 2014.
Ryan then spent two years as the Bills' head coach, compiling a 15-16 record. Ryan's defenses finished in the top 10 in yards allowed in all but three of his 12 seasons as head coach or coordinator.
The Cowboys are looking to fill the defensive coordinator role vacated by Dan Quinn, who was hired as head coach of the NFC East rival Washington Commanders last week. Dallas also has Ron Rivera, who the Commanders fired as head coach last month, and Mike Zimmer, who had a 72-56-1 record in eight seasons as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2014 to 2021.
