Just when you thought Google's graveyard was slowing down, it appears that's not the case. The company just went ahead and killed off Google Podcasts. The company has decided to terminate this application starting today.
Google decides to terminate service, Google Podcasts becomes 294th victim
Well, the good news is the data isn't going anywhere until July. Google Podcasts users can save their data until the July deadline, so if you have a list of podcasts you'd like to export, you can do that first and then move on to other supported podcasts. service.
To be honest, this isn't surprising. Google announced in September that it would be discontinuing Google Podcasts, and since then, many people have actually had the opportunity to move their data to other services. Well, it looks like this service is finally ending today.
That aside, what's interesting is that this isn't the first time Google has actually announced an app/service for podcasts. Google had Google Listen, then Google Play Music Podcasts, then Google Podcasts, then Google Podcasts. I wonder if YouTube podcasts will eventually become the fourth app.
Sometimes even I forget how many apps and services have been removed by Google. I mean, there's a website dedicated to tracking Google breaking apps, services, and products, and you can check it out here. There are a total of 294 bodies buried in Google Cemetery at the moment, with Google Podcasts being the latest, and we can't really see which one will be next on the list of services Google has discontinued.
Does any of you use Google Podcasts? Or have you never thought to try the service? Let us know your thoughts on its untimely demise in the comments below.
