Google is notorious for canceling projects and services. Recently, the company announced that it would be shutting down the Google Podcasts app in the US. Thankfully, those living outside the United States can still use the app. However, that may change in June 2024, as the company has announced that it will be discontinuing this service worldwide.
Google Podcasts is gaining traction. Initially, the service was promoted under a separate banner called Google Play Music Podcasts. Over the years, Google Podcasts has seen many improvements, including a new, user-friendly interface and the ability to pick up where you left off on a different device. You can also add subscriptions via RSS feeds.
However, the service is now owned by YouTube. As a result, Google is asking users to move their subscriptions to YouTube Music. Additionally, if you're not a big fan of YouTube Music, you can transfer your subscription to another app.
Users will now be able to access podcasts from the YouTube Music app
To do this, you need to export your subscription as an OPML file. There's a notification at the top of the company's app encouraging you to use it, but you can also access Google's Takeout service to have your subscription emailed to you. Please note that at the time of writing this article, we were not able to get the export feature from the app to work, at least in India. However, your mileage may vary.
On the bright side, Google is giving users plenty of time to migrate their data to another service. In fact, subscription migration will be supported until July 29, 2024. Also, if you've migrated your feed to the YouTube Music app, you may not see some podcast shows. The reason is that the show may not be available on YouTube Music.
Google Podcasts joins a long list of apps and services the company has shut down. Interestingly, you can see all the applications that Google has killed by visiting Killed by Google, an open source website that tracks all projects killed by Google.
