The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys both enter the 2024 season with hopes of making it back to the playoffs. The Cowboys had Super Bowl ambitions throughout the 2023 season. The Packers spent the 2023 season figuring out if they had another franchise quarterback (PS: they do).
The Packers and Cowboys are currently being named in a trade that could shake up both teams significantly.
Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys expected to make huge trade
Matthew Schmidt of NFL Analysis highlighted this scenario.
Do the Cowboys need Alexander? That won't necessarily be the case, as Trevon Diggs will return from a torn ACL next season, and Daron Brand will have a breakout season in 2023. But they'll likely lose Stephon Gilmore to free agency and play in a tough passing league with some good cornerbacks. has become increasingly important, so Dallas might sniff around to see if they can lure Alexander away from Green Bay.
If the Cowboys were to offer the Packers a 2024 first-round draft pick for Alexander, Green Bay would very likely pull the trigger.
Alexander is in the midst of a four-year, $84 million contract that runs through 2026. He recently made a cryptic but not-so-cryptic post on social media thanking Green Bay fans for the past six years. The star defensive back thinks his time with the Packers may be coming to an end.
It was certainly a tough season for Alexander, who played in just seven games due to injury and suspension. His antics may be wearing thin on the organization, and despite being a great cornerback when healthy, Green Bay is wondering if he's worth it anymore. Maybe.
The Cowboys are a team that desperately needs reinforcements. They have won 12 games for three consecutive seasons, but have yet to advance past the divisional round. This year, the Packers defeated Dallas in the wild card round. In fact, Alexander picked Dak Prescott for that game.
Will the Packers trade Jaire Alexander?
It does not make economic sense to move away from Alexander at this time. The team and Alexander signed a four-year, $84 million extension last season. At the time, only $30 million of the $84 million contract was guaranteed. During Alexander's five-year contract, that bonus was prorated over the salary cap ($6 million annually).
Therefore, Alexander's base dead cap (cost to be traded or released) in 2024 is $18 million (remaining contract bonus dead cap). Most of Alexander's 2023 money There was also rebuilt As a bonus. If the team decides to move on from Alexander in 2024, that new bonus would add another $9.4 million to the dead cap total.
In addition to the finances, Alexander is a leader on this team, and Matt LaFleur has been vocal about his admiration for the All-Pro.
