Early voting has begun, and unofficial counts show Marian Brown and Lupe Valdez leading in the Democratic primary for Dallas County Sheriff.
The race pits incumbent Brown against Sam Muhammad, Rodney Thomas, Roy Williams Jr. and Valdez, who served as Texas sheriff from 2005 to 2017 before running for governor. He will face many challengers including Mr.
Brown will be Dallas County's first black sheriff, according to his campaign website. Valdez was the county's first Latino sheriff.
No Republicans are running.
Brown is currently in the lead with 29,085 votes (45.92%). Valdez came in second place with 22,540 votes (35.59%). Mohammad, Thomas and Williams scored 3,142 points. 2,025 votes and 6,555 votes respectively.

The Dallas County Sheriff's Department, founded in 1846, oversees the Lou Sterrett Justice Center and has an average inmate population of more than 6,000 people and more than 2,000 employees, according to its website. Additionally, this department has jurisdiction over all county areas.

In early voting, 63,335 votes were cast countywide, representing nearly 8% of Dallas County's 1,423,689 voters.
The total votes cast on March 5th have not yet been announced. Voting ended at 7 p.m., but voters who were in line at 7 p.m. were still able to cast their votes.
