The Mavericks take a 1-0 lead in the series after winning Game 2, 108-105, on Wednesday in Minnesota.
Luka Doncic led the team with 33 points, six rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block on 12-of-26 field goal shooting and 3-of-10 3-pointers in 41 minutes of playing time.
The Mavericks team has a 50-32 record and is the fifth seed in the Western Conference.
They defeated the Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder in the first two rounds.
The Mavs missed the playoffs last season, but this will be their second time in the past three seasons to appear in the conference finals.
The Timberwolves are the third seed with a 56-26 record.
They defeated the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Game 3 will be Sunday in Dallas.
The team that wins this series will advance to the NBA Finals to face either the Boston Celtics or the Indiana Pacers.
