Well, that's not the popular view, but would Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. leaving be that bad for this organization? I mean, even Micah Parsons said that the reason they lost in the playoffs was because the coaching staff didn't plan, and that the defense struggled in important games against strong teams. Sometimes change isn't a bad thing. – Kevin Titus/Billings, Montana
Nick Eatman: To be honest, I was somewhat relieved when it was announced that Dan Quinn would be returning as defensive coordinator for the past two years. I didn't feel that way this year. That's the best way I can explain it. Certainly, Quinn is a great coach, and from the interactions I've had with him, he seems like an even better person. But anyone who watched the final game of the season knows that something needs to change. If it's not the head coach, the quarterback, or the play-caller, what's the difference? That being said, even if Quinn remains in the division, I would be fine with the transfer. So does that mean he knows inside how to beat Dallas? Certainly, the Cowboys should have the same advantage over him. Personally, I think the Cowboys need to make some big changes this year, and while it may be difficult to make a ton of personnel changes, they'll probably have a new defensive coordinator and some position coaches next year to shake things up and make new players. This will create a unique appearance.
cart: I agree that it's not necessarily a bad thing that Quinn left for a head coaching opportunity. He's been great here, leading one of the NFL's top defenses the last three years, but there was also a sense that something needed to change after another disappointing playoff performance. The question, of course, is what happens if the change isn't for the better. For Mike McCarthy, who is entering the final year of his contract, this season will literally be a game of battle. Can this team make the leap it needs, especially if someone outside the organization is hired to run the defense? Will it implement a new defensive system and take some time to get used to? Especially in 2024 Given the schedule that awaits the Cowboys this year, will McCarthy have the luxury of taking that time? On the other hand, new voices may be exactly what is needed. If you have talent, a new perspective may open up new levels of success. Look at what Quinn himself did upon arrival in his 2021. So, yes, it's a little daunting not knowing what lies ahead, but like you, I don't necessarily think this change is a bad thing. But if that's the case, we'll likely see a lot more changes around here next year.
