Multiple pro-Palestinian demonstrators were arrested Monday night during a rally at Dallas Love Field Airport to protest President Joe Biden's actions related to the Israel-Hamas war.
Biden was scheduled to arrive in Dallas on Monday for an event honoring the life of former Dallas congressman Eddie Bernice Johnson, who died on Dec. 31 at the age of 89. Love Field just before Biden's arrival.
The Palestinian Youth Movement announced in a news release Monday night that more than a dozen people were arrested during the demonstration.
Nashwa Abdelwahed, a spokeswoman for the group, said the group was proud of those who “put their bodies on the line for the Palestinian people.”
“Biden has essentially aided and abetted Israeli war crimes,” Abdulwahed said. “We will not let politicians, including Biden, rest while there is no justice for the Palestinians.”
The president has expressed support for Israel's military action after the Oct. 7 attack on Hamas, but last month criticized Israel for “indiscriminate bombing” of the Gaza Strip. Protesters across the country are calling for a ceasefire.
After the arrests, some demonstrators remained at the airport, while others gathered at the Lou Sterrett Justice Center to show support for the arrestees, Abdelwahed said.
Dallas Police Department spokesman Michael Dennis said officers received a call shortly before 6:30 p.m. about a “group of protesters” blocking the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Herb Kelleher Way. I admitted that.
Dennis said authorities warned the protesters three times to leave the road, but when they refused, 13 people were arrested. They face highway obstruction or other tolls, he added.
