Two adults were taken to hospital and a 4-year-old child died after their car was caught in rapids Sunday.
JOHNSON COUNTY, Texas — A 4-year-old child was killed Sunday in flash flooding that hit rural Burleson.
Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, a 911 caller told Johnson County Sheriff's Department dispatchers he saw a family of three inside a car stuck in high water on County Road 528. , he said. When the floodwaters rolled in, the three got out of the car and walked onto dry ground. All three are separated, the caller said.
Authorities found the father and mother around 5 a.m., according to the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency. Law enforcement found the 4-year-old in the water at 7:20 a.m., police said.
Authorities took the mother and father to the hospital. They were released on Sunday. The boy, later identified as Lucas Warren, would have turned 5 this month, according to the coroner's report.
Relatives have set up a GoFundMe on behalf of the parents.
At least one Johnson County first responder became stranded in high water while en route to the scene. Officials posted a video to Facebook from the roof of an emergency vehicle.
People living near Route 528 experienced minor flooding Sunday. Neighbors said the flash flood occurred and took about 30 minutes to climb over a 4-foot-tall fence.
“It's literally like a rushing river,” said Jason Larsen, who lives off County Road 528.
Authorities searched his property for his family.
The Fort Worth Fire Department responded to 100 weather-related incidents Sunday, a spokesperson said. Dallas police said they received 17 calls about rising water.
The Johnson County Emergency Management Agency asked people whose homes were flooded to fill out a questionnaire that could help the county secure resources for recovery and mitigation.
