Here are AP stories from the NBA playoffs.
DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic called out to his coach as James Harden made a barrage of 3-pointers.
The Mavericks superstar and NBA leading scorer wanted to protect the Los Angeles Clippers star guard.
In Dallas, it's suddenly defense first.
Doncic had 22 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, and the defensive-minded Mavericks cruised to a 101-90 victory over the Clippers on Friday night, taking a 2-1 lead in the first-round series.
The Mavs ran the same defense that gave them home court advantage in their Game 2 victory in Los Angeles, winning in Dallas three years after losing seven straight to the Clippers and losing all three first-round games on their own. Game 4 will be played Sunday in Dallas.
“I think everyone can see that when you're on the defensive end, the look in everyone's eyes is different,” said rookie center Derek Lively II, who scored all 13 of his points in the first half on the Mavs' lob game. He made 10 dunks before the break. “It’s like when you have the ball, you get aggressive and you’re the aggressor.”
Daniel Gafford, Lively's tag team partner as a dunker and rim protector, made a strong block on Paul George's dunk early in the fourth quarter, but Dallas ended the game with five technical fouls and one egregious foul. I was in complete control. 2 discharges.
Harden scored 21 points for the Clippers, but he had just seven points after halftime, and fellow stars George and Kawhi Leonard had little impact.
Norman Powell also scored 21 points, and Ivica Zubac had 19 points and eight rebounds. However, the Clippers committed 19 turnovers and the Mavericks recorded seven blocks, three of which came from Gafford and two from Lively.
George dealt with foul trouble, recording seven points, five rebounds, five assists, and five fouls.
Leonard missed nine games with inflammation in his right knee and didn't look at ease in his second game back, recording nine points and nine rebounds.
“After the first game, it didn't respond the way we wanted it to,” Leonard said of his surgically repaired knee. “But we're going to get it right. Time will tell. We're doing everything right.”
Kyrie Irving picked up his fourth foul early in the second half, but still scored 19 of his 21 points in just over 13 minutes left, including eight points in the final 1:18 of the third quarter. It was included. Doncic's co-star helped Dallas rebuild an 18-point deficit that had been cut to six points.
The already tough game reached a boiling point midway through the fourth quarter when Russell Westbrook threw Doncic away after fouling him.
Westbrook was called for a technical for that contact and for shoving P.J. Washington after Washington confronted him. Washington was also called for a technician during the sequence and already had one from an earlier shoving match with Terrence Mann.
Westbrook received a flagrant foul for excessive contact when he fouled Josh Green on a breakaway in the first half, and Washington was ejected.
Westbrook missed all seven shots and scored one point, but again drew the ire of the crowd when he bowled to Doncic after Zubac was fouled when Doncic went for a shot. Officials reviewed the play and ruled Westbrook's contact was accidental.
“We have to show our aggression in a different way,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “It's gotten rougher and rougher. I like the physicality. I like the tough possessions. I like all of those things. But I have to make sure I don't get a technical foul or get ejected from the game, because… Because everyone is important.”
Doncic, who limped off the court in the first quarter clutching his right knee, was just 7 of 25 from the field and 3 of 14 from 3-point range.
But Dallas held George and Westbrook to 1-of-10 shooting from deep, while Leonard took just seven shots in 25 minutes and didn't even make three attempts.
“He's trying to find a way to come back,” Lu said. “We're just managing it. Just being smart and making sure we do the right things for Kawhi and seeing how he feels and making a decision from there.”
Harden scored 12 of his 14 first-half points on four 3-pointers in the final two seconds of the first quarter and three minutes. The Clippers finished with 19 turnovers and were unable to score again until the final moments of the third as they simultaneously lost their composure.
“We're all competing to the nines to find a way to win,” Dallas coach Jason Kidd said. “This series is going to be more mental as the innings go on because it's physical. I thought the players did a great job of protecting each other.”
